Preserving cultural heritage is writing it down, which is a lot easier said than done. The process of researching, interviewing, recording, and documenting cultural work can be fraught, time-consuming, and therefore easily de-prioritized. But it is crucial to the viability of a cultural institution. Organizations that document their traditions, practices, beliefs, values, and histories are better equipped to connect with their communities, celebrate their traditions, and secure their futures.

Storytelling is the work of anti-racism. It requires devoting the attention and affection necessary to communicate with openness and reciprocation. It is celebrating a culture by recording or documenting what it does, who it serves, and what’s unique about it. It is a reckoning of the differences and distinctions among us, a conscientious challenge to bias. â€‹

Elise Ballard

Creatrix & Host

My name is Elise Ballard Gilbert, but I go by Elise Ballard.

I identify as a writer and storyteller, skills I learned from 25 years in the tech industry in roles as producer, research writer, and marketing director.

I care deeply about our vast and varied arts and culture communities here in Seattle and the PNW. I’ve been searching for a way to use my skillset support their missions. To that end, I wish to offer full-service writing, documentation, and podcasting services to arts- and culture-focused organizations in Seattle through my company, Umami Media.

To better understand ways and needs of these organizations, I created UmamiPodcast.com, a 10-episode series of interviews exploring traditions, beliefs, values, and practices with people at the center of food cultural heritages.
